Tips for a successful photo shoot

27 August 2025

Organizing a team photo shoot with a professional photographer is a great way to build team spirit within the clinic. Pick a date, let the whole team know, and when the day arrives, everyone shows up ready, well-dressed, and in a good mood for the occasion! Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your photo shoot.

Photographic Style

Think in advance about the style and mood of the photos you’d like. Discuss this with the photographer beforehand so they can prepare accordingly. It’s also a good idea to ask for their advice on what they would suggest based on your team and the clinic.

Photos with a particular tone, specific lighting, or a photographic filter often stand out and are distinguished by their elegance and the quality of the image. However, they can be more difficult to replicate when a new employee joins the team.

Planning the Photo Shoot

Also consider the timing of your photo shoot. For example, it’s best to wait until the clinic renovations are complete so you can photograph both the staff and the new premises at the same time, especially if the photographer is traveling from far away. If you plan to hire new staff very soon, it may be wise to wait a few months after the new employees arrive before scheduling a session, especially if professional photos are taken only very rarely.

Type of Photo

The first thing that comes to mind is a standard head-and-shoulders portrait, well-framed and featuring a warm smile. This is indeed a must-have! However, there are plenty of other types of photos that can be very useful for your visual communications. For example, beautiful photos of the clinic’s interior, a nice exterior shot, or even a video of the premises can be excellent assets for showcasing the atmosphere to your patients and the beauty of your facilities.

Another type of photo we don’t think about as often are staged or scenario-based photos, which are perfect for your website or social media posts. Rather than relying on generic stock images to illustrate an interaction between a patient and a dentist in the treatment room, why not create your own scenes right in your clinic? This will make your content more authentic and human, and your patients will more easily relate to these images.

A good way to do this is to organize an event around it. You could close the clinic for a day or host a summer BBQ on a Saturday, invite employees and their families to take photos, set up scenes, have fun taking both serious and funny photos, and more. This brings your team together for a fun and enjoyable day, while also creating high-quality material for your future visual communications.
